NATIONAL SPORTS AUTHORITY- OTI

ABOUT US

In 1952,the Gold Coast Amateur Sports Council(GCASC) was created by the Ordinance 14. By this action,all sporting activities in the then Gold Coast were brought under one governing umbrella. Among the mandate of GCASC was to ensure the development and promotion of amateur spots in Gold Coast. Among their early achievements was the representation by National Teams at the 1952 Helsinki Summer Olympics, and the 1954 and 1958 Commonwealth Games in Vancouver and Cardiff respectively.

On 1st July 1960, a Central Organization of Sports (COS) was created to replace the Amateur Sports Council. It was headed by Ohene Djan.

In 1972, the COS was renamed National Sports Council(NSC)  and the NLC Decree 330 was replaced with NRCD 254.

To further strengthen the NSC to carry out its mandate effectively the National Sports Authority was established under the Sports Act,2016.

 

VISION OF NATIONAL SPORTS AUTHORITY

The NSA exists to develop,organize,promote and manage competitive and social sports with the view of encouraging health fitness, recreation, national cohesion and professionalism that ensures sustainable wealth creation, vigorous infrastructure development and proactive management which leads to sports excellence and international recognition.

 

OBJECTIVES OF NSA

The law (SMCD) under which NSA currently operates defines the objectives of the Authority as follows:

  1. To promote and encourage the organization and development of, and mass participation in, amateur and professional sports in Ghana.
  2. To co-ordinate and integrate all efforts to raise the standards of performance in amateur and professional sports throughout Ghana

 

FUNCTIONS OF NSA

For the purpose of giving effect to its objectives, the law (SMCD.54) specified the function of the Authority as follows:

  1. Organize and assist financially or otherwise the participation of Ghanaian sportsmen in amateur and professional sports at District, Regional, National and International levels.
  2. Encourage Ghanaians to participate in sporting activities in or outside Ghana
  3. Undertake and encourage research into all matters relating to sports.
  4. Provide the Regional Sports Authority with such financial and other assistance as the National Sports Authority may consider necessary to enable them to promote, encourage and develop sports effectively in their respective regions.
  5. Maintain all playing fields and stadia provided by the government or the body known as the National Playing Fields Board or any Body approved by the commissioner.
  6. Provide and maintain sports centers and facilities for use by all sportsmen and sportswomen.

In accordance to the Sports Act(2016),NSA’s functions of sports promotion and development are currently focused on the following areas:

  1. Foundation Sports
  2. Mass and Social Sports
  3. Sports for excellence
  4. Sports for people with Disabilities
  5. Beach Sports
  6. Capacity Building
  7. Infrastructural Development and Management
  8. Registration of Sports Associations

 

NATIONAL SPORTS AUTHORITY IN OTI

After the creation of the six new regions,the National Sports Authority established a regional office in 2018 headed by Madam Joyce Datsa at the Oti Regional Coordinating Council(ORCC).
