The Oti Regional Minister, Hon. John Kwadwo Gyapong, joined fellow Regional Ministers, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), and other key stakeholders at the National Conference on Illegal Small-Scale Mining (Galamsey), organized by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources (MLNR) and the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology (MEST).
The high-level conference was convened to address the escalating threat posed by illegal small-scale mining activities to Ghana’s environment, water bodies, forest reserves, public health, and broader sustainable development agenda. Participants engaged in extensive deliberations on practical and coordinated strategies aimed at combating galamsey, restoring degraded ecosystems, and preserving the nation’s natural resources for future generations.
The conference provided an important platform for Regional Ministers and MMDCEs to examine and share effective approaches to local-level enforcement, land-use management, environmental protection, community engagement, and public education. Discussions emphasized the critical need for enhanced collaboration among traditional authorities, security agencies, government institutions, civil society organizations, and local communities to effectively address the growing challenge of illegal mining in a coordinated and sustainable manner.
A key focus of the deliberations was the identification of actionable measures and the strengthening of accountability mechanisms to enable Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to play a more proactive and effective role in preventing and curbing illegal mining activities within their respective jurisdictions. Participants collectively renewed their commitment to protecting the environment, safeguarding water resources, and promoting sustainable livelihoods across the country.
The conference concluded with a renewed resolve among participants to intensify efforts toward eliminating illegal mining activities and protecting Ghana’s natural heritage. Stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to supporting government initiatives aimed at ensuring environmental sustainability, conserving natural resources, and securing a cleaner, safer, and more prosperous future for all Ghanaians.
